Arriving at the island of Hvar at 10.30 we start our Panoramic drive towards Hvar town. Together with our driver guide for the Hvar tour, we visit the Lavender fields around the village of Brusje, high up on the old road to Stari Grad. Did you know that lavender cultivation on Hvar began in 1930? One person planted a few lavenders in Velo Grablje, while the other villagers laughed at the idea. 20 years later, the inhabitants of Velo Grablje were making a living off of cultivating lavender and calling themselves a village of billionaires. In 1974 Hvar was the eighth biggest lavender producer in the world. During our tour, we walk through Lavender fields. Appreciate the magnificent color and breathe in the hypnotic qualities.
Afterward, we continue our tour to Hvar town. If you walk from the main square to the north, passing the main city gate or Porta di datallo (Gate of Dates), ascending the stairs through the old part of the city in which there are palaces built in the 15th and 16th centuries, through small bends that give out the aromas of Mediterranean plants, you will reach Hvar’s fort Fortica or how the locals call it Španjola. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century (during the Venetian rule) and was reconstructed in 1579. Today the fort holds a collection of amphora and other exhibits from antiquity and the Middle Ages. Besides experiencing its exquisite architecture, you will experience an unforgettable panoramic view of the city of Hvar, its surroundings, and the Pakleni islands.
Our tour continues as we meet the leading Croatian winemaker “Duboković”. Meet the owner and listen to stories from the firsthand winemaker. His vineyards are located on Hvar, one of the Adriatic’s warmest and sunniest islands, spreading over the micro localities of Sveti Nikola and Medvid bod. Soil structure ranges from limestone pebbles, to white sand with a small percentage of red soil, giving an ideal nutrition source to indigenous varieties such as Mali Plavac, Drnekusa, Parac, Kuc, Bogdanusa, and Marastina. The Plavac grapes Medvid and Medvjedica come from there. All the wines are fermented with natural yeast. Depending on the type of wine, they combine stainless steel and wood of various ages. Apart from the wines, they produce a wide range of varietal and aromatized olive oils.
