If you choose to have a local guide, you will meet them in the park. They are licensed professionals with over a decade of experience. The first step of the tour is a delightful train ride around the Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera), which consists of twelve interconnected lakes. The lakes’ colors change due to the water’s mineral composition and microorganisms living in them, making them a constantly evolving natural wonder. Our guide will lead us through the park’s mesmerizing landscape until we reach a boat that takes us to the Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera).
The Lower Plitvice Lakes system is located in a canyon made of permeable limestone. The highest rocks in the canyon are approximately 40 meters high. Visitors can walk down the travertine cascade between Kaluđerovac and Novakovica brod lake, which leads towards the Veliki Slap waterfall. From there, they can continue around the Lower Lakes upstream towards Kozjak Lake. The highlight of the Plitvice tour is undoubtedly the Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap), which is the tallest waterfall in Croatia.
The Plitvice National Park boasts of the highest waterfall, Veliki Slap – also known as the Great Waterfall. This majestic waterfall is located at the very end of the national park and stands tall at 78 meters. The waterfall is formed when the river Plitvice falls in a single drop into the river Korana, creating a thunderous roar. During winters, the waterfall completely freezes, turning into a stunning giant ice sculpture that is a must-see for visitors.
