Thing or two about Dubrovnik and Split

Dubrovnik is known as ”the Pearl of Adriatic”. Let’s start with a brief historical overview of this unique Croatian jewel. The town was established 1.300 years ago by Greek refugees. It was under the control of the Byzantine Empire, Venice, until the 14th century. Dubrovnik, known as a “Ragusa”, became an independent republic in 1358 and grew to become Venice’s rival in the Mediterranean. Today Dubrovnik is the most popular tourist destination in Croatia and our first place to visit during this trip. From Dubrovnik, we are heading North to Split by visiting the Croatian islands Korčula and Hvar.  The story of amazing Split dates back to ancient Roman times. A Split’s most famous feature is its Diocletian Palace, considered the most spectacular. With locals who continue to live within its walls, it is a living monument of one era and, without a doubt, a “must-see” when visiting Split.

Dry stone walls, vineyards, and olive groves are still cultivated by settlements today. In fact, two of the most famous Croatian white wines, “Pošip and Grk,” are grown on the island.
